How To Reduce Eye Pressure

When you experience eye pressure, it can be uncomfortable and even painful. It may get in the way of concentrating at work or school, or negatively affect your sleep. Eye pressure is often caused by stress, strain, insomnia, and sinus issues. Here is more information about eye pressure and how to find relief.

Reduce Computer Monitor Usage

When you start experiencing eye pressure that is uncomfortable, try to take a break from looking at the computer screen. If it occurs at work, excuse yourself to take a break. You should be allowing your eyes to look away from the computer screen routinely throughout the day, and taking your breaks away from the computer. The same goes for the television; never look directly at the TV for hours at a time. This can make your eye pressure much worse.

Get Enough Rest

Along the same lines of not starting at a computer screen or TV all day is getting enough rest. Your entire body needs an adequate amount of rest, including your eyes. If you fail to get adequate sleep, you will be more tense, which could cause the pressure and tension to start building up in the back of your eyelids. If you are struggling to get enough sleep, talk to your doctor about possible sleep aids.

Change Your Contacts

If you wear contacts, make sure you change them as directed. Don't try to wear disposable contacts for a long time or fail to soak regular contacts. They must only be used as directed and never past their expiration date. Try to remember to remove them before going to sleep and soak them, as sleeping with contacts or using them too long can add to eye pressure.

Use Eye Drops

If you get frequent dry and red eyes, or itchy eyes, that can eventually lead to extra eye pressure if they are not treated. When your eyes get dry, you have to focus more and use your eye muscles harder to keep them lubricated with blinking. Avoid this extra eye pressure by using eye drops any time your eyes feel dry, red, or itchy.

See an Optometrist

When you notice eye pressure is becoming a repeated problem, see your eye doctor, one like Peters Richard OD. They will perform an eye exam to rule out other causes and give you a list of appropriate treatments. It is possible that you need to use a special type of drops or that your prescription has changed, which is leading to extra pressure.
